Breaking: Russian Grand Prix Cancelled

The ripple effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue to be felt across the world. Following on from the removal of Uralalki branding on the Haas Formula 1 team; Liberty media has just released a statement regarding its position on the Russian Grand Prix.

There has been widespread condemnation of the military action currently underway in Ukraine with fans imploring Liberty Media and F1 to cancel the Russian Grand Prix. This year was due to be Sochi’s last time hosting the event. A deal had been struck for the Autodrom Igora Drive just outside Saint Petersberg to host the event from 2023. Formula 1 follows in the footsteps of UEFA who had earlier cancelled the Champions League from being hosted in Saint Petersburg

The cynics among us may look at the wording of their announcement with some scepticism. The careful use of the wording ‘current circumstances’ opens the door to an about-face should the political situation change before the originally scheduled for September 25.
