Spicier 400HP GRMN Supra on the way

By Tatenda Jinya 3 Min Read

Word from Japanese publication Best Car Magazine is, a top of the range GRMN Supra is on the way. The model should break cover by the end of the year as a 2021 model. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring. As such the GRMN Supra is expected to be even more performance focused than the already fun to drive GR Supra.

The standard GR Supra produces a claimed 335hp from a BMW sourced B58, . As we now know from several dyno tests, that power figure has been quite understated. The Supra sister car, BMW Z4 M40i features a 382hp variant of the same B58. This means the GR should comfortably be able to match/surpass the Z4.

Living up to expectations

Since launch the Toyota Supra had big shoes to fill. It’s predecessor, the A80 or MkIV Supra was an aftermarket tuning juggernaut. Tuners have wasted no time in pushing the limits of the GR Supra. Titan Motorsports and Litchfield have managed up to 140hp more out of the B58 with a downpipe modification and tune.

GR Supra GT4

Incidentally this is the roughly the same amount of power (435hp) found in the GR Supra GT4 race car. It will go on sale later this year for around $194 000. The race car comes standard with roll cage, upgraded 6 piston front and 4 piston rear brake calipers. The Supra GT4 also includes race-spec ABS, KW dampers and data-logging.

The GRMN Supra will need to maintain all it’s emissions tech but is expected to reach the 400hp mark easily. Hopefully it will also be an understated 400hp. To make the most of the bump in horsepower, Best Car Magazine also reports a carbon fiber diet for the GRMN Supra. Having already seen use of carbon fibre on the GR Yaris, it should be a no brainer to include it on the GR Supra. A healthy 100kg loss should transform the GRMN Supra to a much sharper vehicle.
